We often act as if the position or role we’re in is ours. That we’ll be here for a while.
But what if you were to design your position if you weren’t in it? What systems, processes, behaviors, and responsibilities would you want to create if you knew you were leaving?
You could choose to show up and be selfish and take all of your knowledge with you, or you could choose to set the organization up for success, make sure there’s proper documentation, and generously make sure that things would go on successfully without you.
I would imagine if you’re choosing the first, it’s because you don’t feel appreciated or like your work matters. But I’m going to assert if you choose the second, then you might realize that you’d actually want to stick around.
