A huge indication that something is wrong is when someone doesn’t want to measure something. Why?
Because measuring things shines a light on objective reality, and looking at that objective reality can be painful if it’s not what you want to see.
Whether it’s a waste treatment plant not wanting to measure the toxicity of its runoff, or you not wanting to look at your student loan statement, or an HR manager looking at the number of BIPOC staff, or zealots not wanting to acknowledge certified election results, the truth can sometimes hurt.
But just because we dislike the truth doesn’t mean we can ignore it for long. What are you afraid of measuring, and what would it look like to take a hard look in the measurement mirror?
