Valuable gemstones are valuable precisely because of the extreme pressure and heat it takes to form them. It takes skilled artisans and/or technicians to handle, cut, and shape them. It’s not easy to work with them, so that rarity builds value.
Salt water covers 96% of the planet’s surface. It is super plentiful. Anyone with a bucket close to the beach can grab as much as they want. It’s so cheap that there aren’t salt water businesses, and anyone can go take as much as they need.
Doing emotional labor is hard, and because it is hard, is not so common.
Hiding behind status, money, or traditional hierarchies is easy, as we’re trained to do that since birth.
