We recently started putting out a bit of bird feed in our backyard to try and attract more birds.
Intending to replenish a day’s worth of feed in our homemade bird feeder, I ended up spilling a bunch of seeds onto the ground.
What initially might look like a mistake ended up accelerating the end goal – getting more birds to come visit the backyard.
This is why I like to think of mistakes as learning opportunities. Unintended consequences emerge from unintended actions. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. But the point is that if you’re dealing with uncertainty, you need to have the safety to make mistakes, because that’s where innovation often comes from.
