Acute Vs. Systemic

I think a common sticking point when we’re talking about things like sexism, transphobia, racism, ableism, etc., is confusing the systems of oppression with the acute expressions of these systems.

Using an ableist slur is an acute expression. Falling prey to implicit biases and not looking into more inclusive hiring practices is a systemic issue.

Making a transphobic joke is an acute expression. Not creating policy specifically around trans rights is a systemic issue.

Understand that if you’re part of a dominant culture, you need to actively oppose oppressive systems, not simply avoid acute expressions of those systems.

Interestingly enough, this focus on acute problems without looking at the systemic ones parallels ALL problems your organization might be facing.
